In 2023, one of our founders — after Omegle shut down — spent three frustrating weeks cycling through random video chat platforms looking for a decent replacement. Most were overrun with bots. Several had shady privacy policies that sold user data. A couple just didn’t work. There was no honest, independent guide that told you which platforms were actually worth your time.
So we built one.
Talkaven is an independent review site focused entirely on random video chat platforms. We don’t accept paid placements. We don’t let platforms sponsor their own reviews. Every platform we cover gets the same five-hour hands-on test before we publish a word.
We actively chat on each platform for a minimum of five hours across multiple sessions to calculate a real human-to-bot ratio. If more than 15% of our connections show scripted or bot-like behaviour, the platform gets flagged.
We test reporting tools and measure moderation response times. If a platform doesn't protect its users from abuse, it doesn't make our list.
We read the terms of service and privacy policy in full. We check for data-selling clauses, third-party sharing, and whether the platform offers genuine anonymity.
We test video and audio quality on desktop and mobile across multiple connection speeds to make sure performance claims hold up in the real world.
Marcus Webb — Lead Reviewer Marcus has been covering online communication tools and social platforms since 2019. A former community moderator for two large Discord servers, he brings a practitioner’s eye to bot detection and moderation quality.
He has personally tested over 60 video chat platforms and approaches every review with one question: would I feel comfortable recommending this to a friend? Based in Berlin, he speaks English and German and tests platforms across both language communities.
At talkaven: We find the havens of conversation so you can skip the wastelands of bots.
